Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Won Alfas chase target in close match

Match report Nomads, unbeaten so far this tour with a draw and a win, returned for their 3rd clash against Sporting Alfas, taking on the 2nds. With the toss subject to it's usual fixing before the game, Nomads were invited to set a target.

Wakefield and Latchman opened the match with a tricky left/right combination and it was not long before the balls started going every which way and loose! However, apart from a few wild deliveries, the Alfas bowlers kept it tight for the opening few overs and got the early breakthrough when Wakefield missed a straight one from Ahmed and was castled.

The unmistakeable Kevin Smith was next in, and looked to build a partnership with Latchman with his customary offside batting. Both men saw off the opening bowlers shortened spells and it was new man to Alfas, Andrew Ransom, back from a 15 year cricket hiatus, who got the next wicket. Kevin Smith trying a leg side shot to a log hop only to find the giant mit of Kevin Laundon a bit in front and to the left of Square leg.

Hussey was next in and Alfas were back to a left/right combination which could have been over oh so quickly as Hussey was dropped early in his innings at slip, Laundon's great hands denied by his lack of flexibility. Hussey made the most of his life going on to hit a 50, as did Latchman who eventually retired in the 28th over for a chanceless 63, not even flustered when he was struck on the helmet.

Hussey continued to build towards his 50 with Thornton (bowled by Ahmed for 4), Shawl (caught on the boundary by Ahmed off the bowling of Perman, a devestated Shawl admitting that he could not see Ahmed on the boundary as he was hiding behind the umpire!) and finally, Hussey hit the 50 with Hardy at the other end. Hardy then decided to see how high he could hit the bowling of Perman and Waqar settled under the ball....got his hands perfectly to it...had it bounce out of his hands in order to make a boring, regulation catch into a diving wonder catch! Hussey was the last man out before the overs ended, finally being caught Ahmed, this after Laundon had dropped him in the deep (claiming he did not see it...!?) and Hussey departed for 59. Bradley and Gregory saw out the innings to a Nomad normal 183.

Perman and Perman, Father and Son, took to the crease to start the run chase and try to get the Alfas off to a good start. Both Perman's looked unruffled against the opening bowlers and sped to a nice 40 partnership before a change in bowling saw great excitement in the game.

Firstly, Shawl got Perman Sr. with a ferocious bouncer that caught Perman in 3 minds...run away, hide or hit and in the end he did a combination of all 3 and gloved the ball in the air to a greedy slip. Laundon came and very nearly went in the same over, firstly nicking Shawl behind only for Smith to see the ball bounce out of his gloves and then again later in the over, Laundon gave another chance but got away with it.

10 overs later, Shawl picked up the Perman split getting Jack to fend at another dangerous bouncer and he was nabbed by Hussey at Point for a fine 40. Shawl producing a great mixture of short and sharp balls to great effect. Ashraf came and went in a few balls, walking past one from Wakefield to allow Smith finally get something out of the game and Byrne did not last much longer, picking out Wakefield with a high looping shot.

However, Hamza and Cooper were enough to get the Alfas over the line. With 14 overs to go when they came together and 54 needed, it seemed like it would be plain sailing. However, this is Alfas 2nds! A few dots, some misses, Hamza dropped by Shawl on the boundary, even with 2 attempts, Hamza dropped by Hussey on the boundary, the "sun" getting in his eyes! The run rate increasing, Cooper smashing a few boundaries to get it back in Alfas favour and then a big 6 by Hamza to finish what was a very enjoyable game for all involved.

Nomads now 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss on this tour with 1 to play, which club will come out on top in the Autumn series of 2016!
