Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Won Alfas chase target after normal mini collapse

Match report After a convincing win on the Saturday between the 1st XI’s of these clubs for the visiting team, Tottington came back for the 2nds showdown hoping to buck the recent trend of losses on the Sunday and had the chance to set a total getting the opportunity to bat first.

It nearly started so well for Alfas as 1st ball, Abdul got a faint nick from the opening batsman but it went too low for the keeper to gather and ran away for 4. Dickinson repeating the boundary finding at the end of the over and the next few to rub salt in the wounds.

2 Overs later and Alfas were at it again, Abdul again getting one of the openers to offer a chance, Grundy this time but the fielder was too busy with his own thoughts to take the two steps forward it needed to take the catch.

Finally, in the 6th over, after a few dress rehearsals, Alfas made the breakthrough, with a little help from the opposition! Walker, in his 2nd game for his new club got Dickinson to sky one to his own teammate Peacock who was fielding for Alfas and he made no mistake with the catch! 29/1 off 6.

4 overs later and Walker had the other opener trudging back to hut. Grundy again going with his pop shot but this time picked the wrong fielder to send it towards, Waqer was not slow in getting forward and diving forward to take the catch just in time, great awareness by the fielder and Tottington were 48/2 off 10, scoring quickly but 2 key wickets down.

2 turned to 3 just 3 overs later as Ahmad got the rarest of sights seen on the Alfas track, an LBW from V. O’Reilly! However, when he calls them he calls them spot on as Franklin was trapped right on his big toe from a beautiful length Yorker. 57/3

Suriner and Butterworth were able to steady the ship a bit with a 25 run partnership before Ahmad finally made the breakthrough again. After a few more dropped catches from the home team, including 2 off one Ahmad over that went to the same spot and the same fielder, he took matters into his own hand and clean bowled Suriner. 82/4

At the other end, Roper had the chance to get his name on the scorecard as he was given a caught and bowled chance that ended up bouncing inside his own bowling crease, miscommunication with the field the reason given…

Butterworth and Brooks were then able to add another 27 to the score before the partnership was broken at the 2nd time of asking! Brooks edged one to the ‘keeper but in the appeals for a stumping the edge was missed by most, including the umpire so he was able to remain! Butterworth eventually fell to Marriner as he sent one into the waiting hands of Walker in the covers 109/5.

Watts was next to go as somehow, against the run of play of the day, Walker took a great catch in the covers. With the sun blazing into his eyes, he managed to track a looping shot from Watts, run in and get his hands to the ball, J. Perman the bowler.

7 became 8 in the next over as R. Brooks, having used up his life earlier, skied one to Mid-off where M. Perman, running sideways was just able to get his hands to it.

S. Brooks was next in and next out! With spin at each end, Marriner was inducing shots while J. Perman was watching on as the batsmen missed his deliveries. Trying to get after one, Brooks went too far down and Byrne was able to whip the bails off just in time.

It was left to Marriner to mop up the tail, getting Kenyon to sky one straight up for Byrne to take behind the stumps and then Ingham went for a wallop but put it straight down Abdul’s throat in the deep and Tottington were all out for 151.


After the break, the Perman Pairing strode out to get the chase underway for the home team.

All went according to plan for the first 5 overs as the batsmen rotated the strike, found the boundary a few times and kept each other in check until in the 6th Over, M. Perman had a rush of blood and swiped hard at one that he only managed to return to the bowler, S. Brooks taking a simple return catch.

Waqer was next in and with J. Perman improved on the opening partnership taking the team to 66 before the young Perman was clean bowled by R. Brooks with one that stayed quite low and having to go for a well struck 34.

The Alfas Mid Order mini Collapse (weekly crowd pleaser!) was next in as 3 wickets fell in quick succession once Perman had left!
First, Waqer was clean bowled by Butterworth, Tocher went for 2, edging a high bouncing ball through to the ‘keeper and Byrne went for 1, missing a full toss and being clean bowled. Butterworth and Brooks leading the fight for Tottington with the ball.

However, matters settled down as Abdul joined Marriner at the crease. Marriner content to allow Abdul take the game to Tottington with a flurry of Boundaries.

Marriner was bowled for 12 by Dickinson but Abdul continued his onslaught with Ahmed beside him who produced some interesting shots of his own for his 14 before he edged through to Kenyon off the bowling of Watts. The Umpire missed this one as well but, the Bowler, the ‘Keeper, the Batsman, the Square Leg Umpire (Skipper Perman), the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker heard the edge and Ahmed, with a little prompting from the skipper walked!

By that stage however, Alfas were just 7 runs short and Abdul managed to get them with ease, bringing up his 50 in the process and remaining unbeaten on 58 and the end.

A comfortable chase in the end for Alfas and another enjoyable trip with the Tottington team completed for another year.

The 2nds' next match is Sunday the 12th March against the wandering Nomads in what will be the 3rd of 4 games in a row (Friday 10th to Monday 13th) at the picturesque Woodbridge Oval next week. Spectators, interested players or new members are more than welcome to attend and enjoy some cricket with some excellent surroundings and full bar with food served.
