Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Won 100 Partnership between Faran and Was secures win

Match report The 2016 Spanish National Finals kicked off on a fine November Friday with St. George's from Lanzarote facing the hosts of the weekend, Sporting Alfas. With life getting in the way, Lanzarote made some last minute signings of M. Perman and J. Braithwaite to swell their playing numbers to 11.

Lanzarote won the toss and elected to bat and McDermott strode out with Alfas' own newest opener, M. Perman. Things were looking good for the islanders for the 1st three overs, Roper's radar was faulty and Lanzarote were up at 5 an over by the end of the 3rd. However, in the 4th over, Bash Ali, got McDermott to smash a flat ball straight to Bhatti who took an easy catch to make the breakthrough - 23/1.

A. French, who had a good innings in this fixture last year was next in but looking quite nervous in the first few overs he faced, thanks mainly to some line and length bowling from Bash Ali. However, he settled down and with Perman, they put on a good 44 for the next wicket, however, it took 18 overs to do so, the Alfas bowlers being very tight with Waqar bowling a great line across the batsmen making it difficult to get away, indeed his first 5 overs only went for 6 runs.

However, all good things must come to an end and this partnership suffered an unfair ending at best. Perman, using local knowledge, saw that the ball had been hit to Laundon and called a run, French, not knowing the fielder's love of ambling decided not to run and Perman looked up to see himself stranded mid wicket with no chance to get back to his crease while Laundon picked up the ball and threw to Butt who took off the bails. A sad end to a well crafted 26 but Lanzarote needed to try and up the tempo now, 67/2 off 23.

James was next and showed why he is so well thought of in England with some fine strokeplay in his quickfire 16. Between them, French and James put on another 40 before James went for one big hit too many and only managed to find Roper on the Cow Corner boundary, a good catch and James was gone for 16, Lanzarote 107/3 off 29.

Rogerson came and went quickly enough, not getting to grips with the spin of Butt who picked up his second wicket by bowling Rogerson for 5, 118/4 off 31. French's innings then came to an end after more than an hour at the crease with the introduction of J. Perman for the home side. 3rd ball, he got French all in a muddle with his leg spin and Crompton showed a safe pair of hands for a simple covers catch, 130/5 off 34.

Cooper, who had replaced Rogerson, then tried to take the attack to Alfas as best he could with overs quickly running out and managed a very credible 21 off 20 before Perman got him in his 2nd over, a sharp nick behind and a well taken catch from Alfas' 'keeper Alger. 149/6 off 36.

In the end, Lanzarote managed to get up to 167, Ellison (9) falling to Roper with Bhatti taking another catch before Holmes (6*) and Webb (3*) saw them through to the end of the innings.

The Alfas chase did not get off to the greatest of starts with Laundon, in the 4th over being adjudged LBW off the bowling of Holmes. At the other end James was showing great pace but with the pitch doing a bit too much, his spell was ended after only 2 initial overs.

1 became 2 in the 6th Over, Alger, clipping one into the hands of Rogerson at cover thought he had gotten away with it as the chance went down, however, the batsmen had stopped to watch the drop and Rogerson had enough time to throw down the stumps with Alger short of his ground. 18/2 off 6.

Faran then joined Butt at the crease and between them, they hit a 100 partnership off 110 balls, both batsmen getting to 50 along the way as the game turned on the important partnership.

However, both batsmen fell before they could see Alfas home, Faran (59) first to go, top edging an attempted hook which bowler McDermott settled under well to take the C&B and then Butt (72) fell to an incredible flying catch by James off the bowling of Braithwaite.

In the end, Bhatti and Crompton saw Alfas home off the last ball of the 30th over with 10 overs to spare.

Lanzarote take on the Catalyuna Tigers tomorrow with Alfas facing the Tigers on Sunday to see who takes the title for this year
