Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Won Captain leads the chase with a maiden 50

Match report Ruddington’s 2017 Spanish tour came to a close against Sporting Alfas 2nd XI on the 16th April with an enjoyable game for the visiting team, using the cricket as a break between the “rigours” of touring!

As the toss had been completed the night before, Ruddington were the team to try and set a total for the home side to chase. However, the wily visitors mixed up their batting order to such an extent that the home side did not know who the dangermen were and who were the rabbits.

The answer to that question came in the 2nd Over as Walker, coming in from the bottom end, clean bowled Molloy for 1 with his 1st ball of the over. Molloy could have been forgiven for being a bit annoyed as the next ball had the ‘keeper diving full away to his left to stop a wild delivery but next ball, Walker had done it again, clean bowling Derry for 0!

Fruit and Marriott were able to navigate a few overs together before, just after receiving a life as a sharp, hard edge from Fruit just failed to stick in the ‘keeper’s gloves, Fruit fell in the next over, nicking one straight behind and Byrne taking the catch off Abdul.

Gandy was next in and looked to stamp some composure on the innings with some unhurried play and straight bats. Marriott however could not quite say the same! The left hander was being tortured by young Roper with well-placed deliveries and with the final ball of his 2nd over, Roper got one through Marriott’s defences and clean bowled him.

However, the young bowler had a rude awakening once Storr came to the crease! Maybe a bit distracted by the left hander, the bowler put down a few too many leg side deliveries which Storr was able to treat with delight, smashing one over for 24.

Marriner was brought on and toyed mercilessly with Gandy, and Fletcher having put him to point. 4 times Marriner got Gandy to pop one towards point and 4 times it just evaded Fletcher, Fletcher finally moved across to Square Leg after trying to get out of the way of one too many balls and taking a rapping on the shins! Marriner got his man in the end though as Gandy played the same shot once too often and found the waiting hands of J. Perman this time just wide of point. Just before drinks, Storr sailed through to his 50 and immediately tried to walk off but was commanded to stay on until the drinks break while his travelling companions tried to convince someone else to pad up!
After drinks, Fletcher, on for a charitable donation, got the new batsman Pullen to sky one up and nearly over point but Marriner was able to back pedal and take a good catch right above his head. Fletcher nearly had another as T. Wat edged one through to the ‘keeper only for the Umpire to miss it, making sure he got the right amount of balls in the over this time.

Ash came and went in quick succession as Marriner somehow got the ball to not bounce over the moon and hit the stumps before, in the same over, the Mahou Men combined for a stumping to give Marriner 3 on the day and Storr returned for the final 8 overs to add some respectability to the score.

Ahmed came on to replace Marriner and the man from the Top end was able to finish off the innings before the overs ran out, first clean bowling Wat and then getting Storr to try to smash a big hit to Cow Corner but Abdul was in place to take a good catch on the boundary and keep Ruddington to 181 all out.

After tea, Skipper Perman headed out with Tocher to start the chase, with Frampton lining up to start the bowling. It seems that Ruddington wanted everyone to have a go and the chase got off to a good start with 17 coming off the 1st over!

At the other end, Car Man kept things more in control with a maiden to start with and then the 1st bowling change happened in the 3rd over as Frampton retired his bowling arm.

Both batsmen looked happy at the crease and with his team cheering him on, Skipper Perman went through to his maiden 50 off 45 balls and came off with Ahmed going in to replace him.

Ruddington made the breakthrough shortly after as Tocher, on 38 and looking well, decided to leave a straight one and got clean bowled by Wat. Ahmed followed shortly after, making a quick fire 21 before hitting one up to be caught off the bowling of Pullen.

Fletcher and Cooper put on 30 for the next wicket before Cooper handed a catch to the Ruddington fielders off the bowling of Molloy. Byrne joined Fletcher at the crease and with the target in sight, Fletcher hit 3 4’s in one over before chipping a tame catch to Mid Off, initially taking the fielder by surprise but he managed to gather his wits and the ball to dismiss Fletcher for 25.

With 6 needed, J. Perman came in and had the audacity to try and run on a wide to take the strike but Byrne was not in the mood to run and finished the game 2 deliveries later with 2 4’s to bring up the required target.

Next week, LLangellen CC from Wales visit Alfas with matches on the 22nd and Monday the 24th, as ever, anyone and everyone are welcome to join us at the ground for entertainment and refreshments.
