Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Won Muddy leads the way to victory!

Match report Sporting Alfas Invitational 8 vs. Intellectuals featuring Valenica Stars

A "sporting" get together in the spirit of the Lions occurred on Sunday as Sporting Alfas, with a little help from their friends at Torrevieja travelled down to Bonalba to face the Intellectuals, ably assisted by some old favourites who have since moved to 1st Division Valencia Stars. To make it feel even more like the Lions, Alfas even included a token Scot! Arriving in Bonalba, Alfas found that they were victim of a late pull out as one of the Torre invitees was not able to make it so the 8 men and boys got ready.

Losing the toss, Alfas were asked to bowl and started with a youthful mixture, K. Roper of Alfas and C. Wood of Torrevieja taking the new ball. It was nearly a dream start for both young bowlers as, in each of their 1st overs, they found the edge, only for slip to drop it both times!! Muddy!!! After their initial shocks, both batsmen started to find their groove, Asad with thundering boundaries and Zeeshan finding the gaps to rotate the strike.

Roper missed out on another chance for a wicket as the hard hitting Asad pummelled one high, high into the air but not very far. In the end it bounced just 2 feet away from the bowler who seemed to have misjudged the flight of the ball, adding injury to insult, the young man then got the ball in his elbow as skipper Perman tried to get the wicket that should have been by going for the run out, only for the bowler to be the wrong side of the stumps, casually watching play!

Shortly after the bruising incident, K. Wood came on in place of Roper and "spun" the game on it’s head with his interesting Spin! 1st ball saw Zeeshan get deceived by one that careened past his bat and clipped the top of the stumps, earning the breakthrough. Khawar was next in and out, 1st ball, chopping one to the covers where C. Wood took an easy catch and the game was changing.

Next over, Wood was at it again as he got Asad to swing hard at one that he nearly connected properly with. However, it came off the bat, yes Asad, it did, and Byrne took a quick catch above his head before it raced away to the boundary. Alfas appealed and Asad took every chance to remain but Vince, wearing white trousers, still had the Umpire’s finger with him and did the honours, Asad showing great cricket spirit while waiting for the decision!

Wood claimed another two quick wickets as Hussnain gave the bowler-‘keeper combination another wicket before Abdul found Roper at the square leg post who took another catch.

In between those wickets, C. Wood got the wicket his bowling deserved, clean bowling Shakeel for 0.

With the team suddenly floundering, Richards came out to dig his side out of trouble and dig he did. With game management and home ground knowledge, he cajoled, ordered and commanded his strike partner to return the pressure to the Alfas side. Poor Lavery was the subject of this for quite some time and shared a vital stand with his ‘skipper who pushed, prodded and pounded his way to 50 not out and brought the score up over 100.

However, Lavery finally fell to a good delivery from Alger who got him LBW, well it was from the Umpire’s angle just outside leg stump but all agreed it was out and last man Vince came in but was undone by some inspiring words from the captain to his bowler – “just bowl straight”.
A good display from both teams with the innings ebbing and flowing and ending on 126.

After a quick break, Alfas started the chase with Muddy and Tocher opening. Hussnain, after going for 5 in his first over, went on a maiden spell and after 4 overs he had only gone for 5. At the other end, Shakeel made the early breakthrough, getting Muddy caught by Richards at Mid off, a shot that seemed destined for the boundary rope before it was taken somehow. 2 overs in and the breakthrough already. 9/1
Chander, on loan from Intellectuals, was next in and between him and Tocher brought the score up to 12 over the next 5 overs before Tocher, still looking to get off the mark, got one that reared up on him out of the blue and he could only fend it to Gully. 12/2

Byrne joined Chander but the partnership never got the chance to get going as, Richards brought himself on and got a double breakthrough, having both Chander and then Byrne caught at mid on by Asad and Alfas were in touble at 22/4 off 13.

However, Alger was joined by K. Wood, confident after his 50+ against Madrid the previous day and together they dragged the team along, alternating the strike with relish and finding welcome boundaries where they could. A vital partnership of 62 was ended as Alger missed that old foe, a full toss, and was bowled just 9 short of his 50.

K. Roper came in and kept the score ticking along with K. Wood, Wood surviving a terrible shot and being shelled when on 19, the ball closer to hitting the fielder's head than his hands! Between them they added another 30 and took the score over the 100 mark before Roper became another victim of Richards, who took another diving catch off the bowling off Hussnain, getting another wicket in his last over.

However, momentum was with Alfas, despite the home side's captains insults to the umpires (nice friendly match that it was)and Wood, joined by the skipper, was able to see the team over the line with a fine 40* and the entertaining match, one which could have gone either way and swung both ways a few times ended.

Thank you to all the players, Alfas and Torre, who turned up for the game and played it within the spirit of cricket at all times.
