Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Lost Alfas fall short in the chase

Match report After losing the opening match of their tour, Thele returned to the Woodbridge Oval after a hard night’s touring and grabbed the chance to bat first in order to give some of their players much needed recovery time.

A change to the visitor’s line up saw Cooke and Morris opening up as Alfas took the field with 10, Fletcher stuck in traffic and considering Dukes of Hazzard manoeuvres in order to make it to the ground on time! Roper and Ashraf opened up and started with some economical bowling and in the 5th over struck the opening blow. Fletcher having arrived and taken an over to take his position, shambled into 2nd slip and took a nonchalant catch to dismiss Morris off Roper’s bowling.

Portugal’s own Holder was in next and, in a charmed life, nearly made it to 100 before being dismissed for 96. Before his eventual dismissal, Cooke fell to a great ball by debutant Amad while a decidedly shaky White and shellshocked Why fell in the same over to Faran in the same over, both players edging through to the ‘keeper.

Meanwhile, Holder was closing in on the 100 and on his 7th life of the match! From the dubious Fletcher thinking a pad counts as a nick behind to a lolly dollop to the captain in midwicket, nobody could take the catches…. However, commeth the hour, commeth the man, Ben Marriner who has a bloody (literally) history in this match stepping up to do some major damage, only to the batmen’s innings this time however.

With Holder just 4 short of his ton, Marriner teased him and got a simple return catch to end the charmed life of the No. 3 batsman. Marriner was not finished though and in the very same over Choules popped one up and found the elbows of M. Perman, never one to use his hands if he can help it!

2 overs later, Marriner was at it again! Not satisfied getting the highest scorer of the day out, he also saw the back of the highest scorer of the day before for the Visitors when he got R. Why to flash one into the hands of Amad, adding a catch to his wicket on a fun debut for the man. Things got worse for P. Cooke next in as 1st ball he got all tied up by another Marriner special and got everything on the ball to loop it up for the ‘keeper to claim.

However, from 202, Arrowsmith marshalled his tail and first with Sankaran and then Cooper, managed to get the visitors to a very good 255 innings closed.
After tea, last year’s star openers, M and J Perman stepped up to start the chase and looked good from the start. Both batsmen were seeing the ball well, picking up some boundaries and moving the score along at over 5 an over before Jack was first to fall, walking past one from Sankaran to see his stumps uprooted for 27.

Fletcher came in and gave the bowlers some hesitation with his left hand, quite unorthodox batting and added another 53 with Perman before Holder got one through his defences and bowled him for 23.

Byrne joined Perman at the crease but the returning Sankaran finally managed to get his man, trapping Perman in front as he stepped back to one to fall for a personal best 81.

Faran came in and controlled the batting for a while, allowing Byrne to watch some nice strokes, ones he could not replicate as he picked out a shocked Sankaran in covers to fall for 10.

With the sun starting to dip behind the mountains, Faran in fine form and Evans coming in with some nice chops and drives, the match was in the balance until a truly match winning moment came from R. Why. Faran, on 42 and seemingly untroubled struck a firm drive back at the bowler who, off balance, managed to throw a hand at the catch and dimiss the batsmen with a hush decending on the ground as the crowd took in the moment!

Left with 40 to get off the last 5 overs, Alfas tried to match the required run rate but could not quite get there, and a fine last over from White, going for just 4 off the very last ball confirmed a 15 run victory for the visitors.
