Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Won Alfas make short work of Torre

Match report Torrevieja rolled into the Woodbridge Oval to take on the Alfas in the latest league match 1 man short and with a lot of youth in their team, prompting some questions from the Alfas as to whether they were playing Torrevieja, or Torrejoven!
With their depleated numbers, Torre opted to bat first on a very warm day and Alfas took to the field with the intent of restricting Torre from posting too high a total. Alfas opening pair of K. Perman and Abdul Wajid put pressure on from the word go and got rewards in the 4th over, Abdul getting K. Wood to edge to slips where Laundon, rolling back the years, took a smart one handed catch diving away to his left. 8/1 after 4 overs. Over the next few overs, Guichard looked comfortable and started to settle before, in his 6th over, K. Perman managed to catch his edge, Byrne taking the catch behind, Guichard falling for a good 20, 26/2. Before the end of his spell, Perman managed to get one more wicket, Darwen picking out a kneeling Dell in gully who showed a safe pair of hands to get his day off to a good individual start, more on him later!
Second change bowlers, Laundon and Waqer Ashraf then took over the bowling duties. In his first over, after the drinks break, Waqer made an immediate impact, catching Wareing’s edge with Byrne taking it again behind the stumps, 33/4 off 16 overs. Torre skipper Blann then came in and hit some nice shots early but with Laundon not giving anything away, Blann cut one to Waqer who let it slip between his legs, deciding to come back for a second, Waqer unleashed a demon throw from the boundary and Byrne took the stumps with Blann, bouncing down the wicket after a despairing dive, was just short of his ground and Alfas had a big breakthrough, 36/5. A few overs later, Laundon finished his spell with the wicket of Joshi, gloving one through to the ‘keeper for his 3rd catch of the day and Torre were 49/6 off 25 overs.
Thakur tried to get things moving in the next over with Shelton, hitting Waqer for 12 in his final over to bring the score to 64 before Perman threw the ball to Jack Perman to try something different. First ball to Shelton saw the batsman miss an advancing drive and get stumped before the 4th ball of the over saw Appleby clean bowled. Torre 64/8. At the other end, Dell came on and with Thakur trying to advance the score, carved one up in the air, Dell moving swiftly to pouch a C&B to end the innings.

With the Tea break still 30 minutes away, Alfas used the time to give some ring rusty batsmen a chance and opened with J. Perman and Waqer. Guichard repeated the opening of the innings for Torre, this time with the ball instead of the bat and put in some solid work, not giving too much away. In tandem with Wareing they did not let the Alfas openers get too relaxed and Wareing struck just before the Tea break, getting Waqer for 5.
After tea, Perman, joined by Dell, took over the scoring and made a solid 33 before being struck down by Wood, denying young Perman a 50 but giving the “slightly” older M. Perman a rare chance at the crease. In between, Dell continued to alternate between Dibs and Dabs and all out swings to race past his previous best of 9, eventually falling on 20 to bring an end to an entertaining innings. Byrne went out to join the Skipper in the middle with just 7 runs needed and hit a 4 and a single before the skipper knocked one for two to round out the win.
A tough day for Torrevieja but with so much youth in the team, the future could be set well for them, 24 points for Alfas to lift them back to the top of the table albeit with more games played than Pinatar who sit in second and visit the Woodbridge Oval next weekend for a mouthwatering clash.

Alfas MOM – Jack Perman 33 and 2/0.
