Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Won Alfas get the win over Pinatar

Match report A sunny day in October at the Woodbridge Oval saw Pinatar, recently crowned champions of division 2 (Congratulations from Alfas) arrive to take on Sporting 2nds for the 3 time this year. With 1 win and 1 draw already for Pinatar, Alfas were looking to even the score.

Pinatar arrived with a much changed side, using their wide roster to allow some more of their club's players have playing time and, after losing the toss, were invited to bat by Alfas.

Sadfar, as usual, took a liking to the opening bowlers and proceeded to cut, pull, slog and attempt to kill Golfers in the opening spell! In fact, after two pulled 6's into the middle of a golf celebration, the match had to be played from just one end such was the carnage he was creating in the golfer's celebrations! Buckley at the other end played a much more reserved role, allowing his partner to set the scoreboard alight!

Both openers saw off the opening bowling of Bash and Tyler (and Tyler's wides!) but the match changed with the introduction of the 1st change bowlers....

Kieran Perman, in his 2nd over, got the edge of Buckley's bat with Byrne taking a sharp, one handed catch just as it was passing him. The very next over, Waqer with his 2nd ball had Safdar caught by K. Perman (still celebrating his wicket from the last over) and Pinatar had gone from 68-0 off 15 to 69-2 off 17!

Worse was to follow as Oliphant had no answer to Perman's pace and saw his stumps destroyed before J. Patal marched out to the crease, clouds streaming past his giant frame. Perman was not worried at the size of the target though as he knew, the taller they come, the farther they fall and produced an inch perfect Yorker that sent Patal crashing to the ground as if he had been shot and his stumps careening to all 4 corners of the ground! 69-4 off 18.

New batsmen B. Singh and B. Buckley then proceeded to slowly dig Pinatar out of the state they were in and put on 15 in the next 5 overs before Perman, with his Penultimate ball, got one to rise quickly on Buckley which she could only prod into the semi awake, unwaiting hands of Bash!

With the score on 85-5, Spin was decided on and James Wellington Smith came on to replace Perman, robbing him of a chance for a 5for! Sure words were said in the Perman house that night!!

It did not take JWS much time to make his mark on the magic end, 6 balls in fact before he got Copperwheat to pop one to Karl Pakiam. Waqer and JWS continued to bowl economical overs against the Singh Twins before a mix up in the middle allowed Alfas to run out V. Singh who never really got going. However, B. Singh was staging his own mini comeback at the other end. Sinah came and went without troubling the scorers before Wambeek, forgetting he was playing for Pinatar after recent games for Alfas midweek, ran B. Singh out by dropping one in front of his feet to a spinner and setting off! Singh never stood a chance, but should have stood his ground! JWS picked up the last wicket of S. Singh shortly after and from 60-0, Pinatar had crashed to 119 all out.

After tea, McKinnstry and J. Perman took to the crease to set about getting the target, Alfas sensing they could level the year's series, on paper at least! However, the same start as Pinatar could not be achieved as McKinnstry popped one back to the bowler in the 5th over and was C&B. It could have been much worse for Alfas as Perman was dropped 1st ball in the very first over!! As it was, Perman had a very interesting innings.....in the 6th over, after his customary mix up while running between the wickets, he slipped, fell, bounced, tumbled and skidded down the wicket! The desperate cries of the Pinatar field put off their fielder who took a wild throw towards Buckley but nowhere near the 'keeper or the stumps and Jack was able to get back up, dive, bounce and land inside his crease. In the 11th over he was dropped again and then in the 15th over the worst of all the drops by Patal gave him another and last life on 17. To be fair to Patal, he had by this stage been cut down by Kieran Perman twice in the match as after following up with the Yorker in the first innings, Perman cut one straight into Patal's shin while batting to give him a day he won't forget!

J. Perman's luck finally ran out on 37 in the 26th over when Wambeek tempted him into a shot and was caught, 4th time lucky! However by then, Alfas were 83 and K. Perman had moved untroubled onto 29. Cooper joined him at the crease and between them they got Alfas easily over the line, Perman notching his 4th 50 of the year in the process, passing 500 runs for the year as well as becoming the 2nds leading wicket taker with 2 games to go!

A Win for Alfas and a hearty thank you to Pinatar for making the trip up, hostlities will resume again in next year's league!
