Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Won Alfas chase down 210 in final friendly before league

Match report Sporting Alfas 2nd XI vs. Newington C.C. 08/05/2016

Newington returned to the Woodbridge Oval for the 3rd and final game of their 2016 tour having won one and lost one so far, the Alfaz 2nds would be the deciding match on their tour and Newington, having beaten the 2nds last year would have been fancying their chances.

Deciding to set a total, D. Overbury, scorer of a century in this fixture last year, opened with Parsons and carried on where he left off last year, showing no respect to the opening bowlers and quickly getting the scoreboard ticking along. Finally, just after the 50 partnership between the openers, Parsons with a great contribution of 8, Overbury misjudged one from the returning B. Ali and offered a simple C&B to the bowler. 52/1

Perry came in next and took over from Overbury, hitting nicely and keeping the score ticking along while at the other end, Parsons seemed to have woken up and started to contribute in his own right. This pair put on another 50+ partnership before, changing things, skipper Perman brought on Leggy Jack Perman and he managed to get one to rip, grip and bounce up causing Perry (33) to loop one into the waiting hands of Laundon at slip. 121/2

Alwalia had the misfortune to come in just as K. Perman was starting a spell and saw his stumps destroyed with a ball so forcefull that it ended up getting chipped from the stumps on it’s way through them, 124/3.

J. Overbury joined Parsons at the crease and together they moved the score on for another few overs. Parsons after 30 overs was closing in on his 50 but eventually, in the 33rd over, on 45, he picked out J. Perman off the returning B. Ali and his patient innings was brought to an end. 168/4.

D. Ward joined Overbury but was the victim of a terrific direct hit from Dell at fine leg when scampering through for a single and was run out without scoring, 170/5.

A. Morgan, on the back of 2 ducks so far this trip was next in and his first run was greeted with the biggest cheer of the day, such was his relief at not added to his duck collection! However, it could not last long for the man out of form and after watching J. Overbury score a quickfire 50 at the other end, Morgan was bowled in the last over as the Skipper brought himself on to end the innings with some entertainment. 207/6

As Black came in, Overbury mentioned to him NO dot balls, Black hit the first ball just wide of the bowler and set off, however, he did not hit it wide enough and Skipper Perman gathered and threw down the stumps, sending Black back to the hut with a Golden Duck for company. 207/7 The over ended with 2 final singles and Newington closed their innings on 209 for 7.

After tea the Alfas chase commenced with Ex Chairman and current good for nothing Laundon joining J. Perman to open the innings. Quick singles, doubles and trebles were not on the agenda during this opening partnership and the frustration soon got the better of young Perman who managed to get himself run out on 9 in the 4th Over. 18/1

In form Waqar joined Laundon at the crease but saw Laundon take the majority of the srike in their partnership of 24 before Laundon, looking for a big boundary only found the safe hands of Overbury for the 3rd game in a row to end his innings on 26. 42/2.

Abdul came in next and was greeted with 5 wides to start with as Parsons got a little too excited having picked up Laundon’s wicket in the same over! However, next over Abdul was found wanting as Morgan, in his 6th over on the trot (the benefits of having Daddy in the team!) finally picked up a wicket and Abdul was gone for 0. 55/3.

Byrne, much to his disgust and fear was sent in to partner the tireless Waqar who immediately started looking for quick singles and doubles, much to Byrne’s annoyance! The pair added a further 28 to the score before Byrne, trying a reverse sweep, followed through a bit to much and as the ball sped towards the boundary, could only look in shock as he demolished his stumps with his follow through and was gone for 12. 83/4.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man though and Shakesperian words matched the age of the next batsman as Cooper joined Waqar at the crease. Not for long however as Waqar was gone 2 runs later, popping one skywards for Black to take. 85/5.

However, the old head of Cooper and the young blood of K. Perman swung the game with the next partnership. As the fielder encroached on Cooper, he flailed and drove the ball to all areas of the ground as Perman was a willing foil and allowed the older head to dominate proceedings. Both batsmen amassed runs and Cooper drove another 4, his 7th of his knock to bring up his 50 and depart from the field of play as his hamstring seemed to twinge……honest!

Perman fell shortly after for 43, the ball after hitting a massive 6 deceiving him by being straight as an arrow and castling the batsman just 7 short of a deserved 50 but with the returning Bash Ali living up to his name smashing a huge 6 and a 4 in his short cameo, the Alfas were able to cross the line in just over 2 hours batting, ending on 212/6.

A very enjoyable game, another tour completed by the delightful Newington and a good warm up for Alfas 2nd’s first league game next weekend up in Madrid.
