Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Lost Ibiza get a clean sweep, Alfas fall 5 runs short
Match report
Ibiza showed up in high spirits after their resounding victory the day before in the Andrew Bond Cup and were looking to make it a clean sweep against the 2nd’s on a fine November’s Sunday.
With the toss being bypassed for a quick round of Hot Potato, Alfas took the field while Ibiza were to set a target. Captain Gooda and R. Parmenter took guard, Braithwaite steadied himself and….a Maiden started us off. However, the 2nd over was a bit more exciting, Hamza coming up from the bottom end, Parmenter hit one straight back and was called through by Gooda who forgot to look behind him! Skipper Perman gathering the ball and scoring a direct hit saw Parmenter run out 1st ball!! Gooda not doing a good job at hiding his hysterics either at the other end.
Feazy joined his skipper at the crease and took over calling duties from Gooda and they stayed together for 7 overs before Hamza got Feazy to sky one of his own bowling and managed to take a decent high effort, 15/2 off 8.
G. Cooper was next in and put on a quick 30 with his skipper before Gooda fell to the newest streak in Spanish Cricket getting extended. A. Ransom, who in his 1st two games for Alfas took a wicket with rank long hop got the money ball again and Gooda could only look on aghast as he picked out Amhed in the covers. 45/3 off 14.
Hadlow was next in and took his remarkable weekend to further heights as he managed to hit a 50 but not before losing Cooper to another Run Out. Cooper flicked one to the covers and Ahmed gathered and threw at Ransom guarding the non-strikers end, the throw was so powerful though, Ransom could only look on as the ball bounced off him and fell onto the bails, Cooper not quite believing the passage of play and Ransom asking to come off due to a hand injury! 71/4
Hadlow and Cruttwell however put on a sterling partnership for the next wicket and took the Ibiza team up to 130 before, just after getting his 50, Hadlow holed out to Perman, taking it just at the tips of the grass blades, off the bowling of Ahmed. With only 1.5 overs left, Cruttwell and Hughes put on a final 7 runs and Ibiza ended their innings on 137.
Deciding to go with speed to rotate the strike, Skipper Perman strode out with Waqer Ashraf to begin the chase. Matters started well for the home side and, a disastrous drop by Hadlow aside, sped along to an opening partnership of 58 before the 1st wicket fell.
The introduction of Cruttwell proved decisive as he trapped Ashraf LBW in his 3rd over and the floodgates burst!
Ahmed was next to go in the next over, having got a single to keep strike, Hughes got him to pop one up and he was gone in 4 balls. Byrne did not fare much better, failing to pick one up that swung back in from outside leg and Cruttwell had another LBW and Alfas had gone from 58/1 to 75/4 as Cooper was out in the flurry as well, Hughes getting a 2nd.
However, Alfas still had their opener moving on and joined by the resolute Braithwaite, with batting in reserve, the game was still in the balance. However, nobody told J. Parmenter that and with his 3rd over, history, nay a Legend was made.
With the light getting dusky, the straight as an arrow bowler deprived the home skipper of a 50. On 49, Perman went for a big shot to bring up his landmark but missed and the ball clattered into the stumps. 2nd ball, J. Perman facing and the same outcome, a big shot, a miss and a bowled! Hat-trick ball, A. Ransom facing and the field came in….they were not needed as Parmenter again got it straight on the stumps and Ransom forgot about the bat and used his leg, but Nix’s finger was up and the Ibizan’s staged a pitch invasion such was the glee/shock at what they had just witnessed!! However, Parmenter was not quite finished and next ball he also got E. Wigley, again bowled and finished with a quadruple wicket maiden and the match was firmly Ibiza’s now with Alfas going from 105/4 to 105/8 by the 25 over mark.
Laundon marched out to try and help Braithwaite resuscitate the Alfas chase but Parmenter came back next over and did away with the Alfas legend for 1. With Hamza having gone off to work without notice, Evans stepped up to fill the final batting position and with Braithwaite, put on another 20 for the final wicket but with the light failing and the ball disappearing into the gloom, Alfas’ chase came up 5 runs short when all overs had been bowled. 132/9 off 30 overs.
A very enjoyable game, congratulations to Ibiza for their clean sweep, the teams will meet again on the luxury island around Easter of 2017 where battle will resume! Alfas prepare for the Alicante cup next weekend against the Intellectuals and then the National Finals of the Cricket League the last weekend of November to wrap up the season.
