Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Sporting Alfas Sunday v Intellectuals C.C on Sun 18 May 2008 at 13.00
Match was Abandoned Rain
Match report
The 9th staging of the Alicante Cup played anually between Sporting Alfas CC and Intellectuals CC ended on a damp note as the weather had the final say.
Having won the toss, the Intellectuals opted to field, and early wickets for S.Hersh resulted in the openers soon returning from whence they came. A sparkling 79 from S.Ur-Rehman from just 64 balls put the innings back on course, and whilst he was in partnership with Hickie (22), a large total looked to be on the cards. Unfortunately said total failed to materialise as poor running and shot selection saw a host of wickets fall and it was left to a determined rearguard effort from Cowley (22 n.o.) to see the home side to a challenging 197-9.
After a quick turnaround under threatening skies, the home side started like a team on a mission as firstly Cowley (3 for 7 from 4 overs) and then Sunderland (1 for 12 from 4) ripped through the Intellectuals´ top order, the visitors left reeling at 20-4 after 8 overs. The grim overhead conditions, however, left the home skipper with no option but to resort to slow bowlers given the poor visibility and although the odd chance was created courtesy of some fine tweak from G.Metcalfe, just six overs later the heavens opened, the match being abandoned shortly thereafter.
As current holders, the home side were very kindly told to keep the Alicante Cup on its clubhouse shelves for another year by the Intellectuals CC and S.Ur-Rehman was declared Man of the Match for his fine knock.
