Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Sporting Alfas Sunday v Levante 2nd XI on Sat 07 Jul 2018 at 1.00
Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Won 242 defended in thrilling contest

Match report Under the shadow of England's date with destiny in the World Cup against Sweden, 22 cricket players and 1 umpire gathered in Albir as Levante visited Sporting Alfas 2nds for the latest league match. Both captains denied the big match would have any bearing on the decision at the toss and visiting captain Tivey won it and sent the home team in to bat.

After losing Skipper Perman in the 4th Over, Pennick joined Waqar and they took the score to 86 before wiley master Pete West had Pennick caught by Tivey who used all his height to just stop the ball clearing him and Alfas were two down in the 14th Over. Kieran Perman was next in and added another 74 with Waqar, who went on to a calm 50 during the partnership. However, with Perman just 5 short of a 50 of his own, he reached for a wide, wide delivery and only managed to gently guide it to Ullah waiting on the boundary, the catch taken very well down by his ankles, 160/3 in the 25th Over.

Abdul joined Waqar at the crease but his stay was neither long nor enjoyable as he was dismissed for just 3, picking out Garvey off the bowling of Singh, some good running with Waqar however allowed the two men to add another 24 to the total. Hunt joined Waqar at the crease who by now had been batting for 2 hours and was closing in on a fine 100 but, the nervous 90's struck and he was clean bowled by the dangerous Orville for 91, the first of 4 wickets for the Levante man. With the score on 198, Orville took over one end and Hunt (16), Byrne (5) and Hamza (Golden Duck) all fell to his bowling. Thanks to a late flurry of runs from Ahmad, Alfas were able to reach 242 in their allotted overs, not quite hitting the magical 250 but a solid total none the less off the back of Waqar's mammoth innings.

With the Big match kicking off, Little and Garvey were the men nominated not to watch and get on with business with bats in their hands, and get on with business they did. Taking a liking to Alfas opening pair of Hamza and Ahmed, the visiting openers put on 89 for the first wicket, going at 6 an over for the first 10 overs, before the first change bowlers were able to first slow them down and then break the partnership. Kyle Roper getting Garvey to chase a wide one and with the 'keeper up, got a toe on the end of a wide one into the 'keeper's gloves. However, Orville was back out to put the cosh on the home side again, this time with a bat in his hand and hit a quick 32 before another change of bowling got the breakthrough again. Abdul getting one to swing away at the right time which Orville could only edge through to the 'keeper, Byrne taking it diving forward just above the ground as Orville walked away. Asad came and went in a blink and you miss it cameo, sending Abdul up into the summer sky but straight to Roper who called the catch with authority and made no mistake as the ball came back down from orbit. Alfas starting to get a foothold in the match now...

Little's innings finally came to an end after the second drinks break and it was a close decision to see who was more delighted, the bowler or the batsman, so harsh the conditions for a prolonged innings in 30 degree heat. A fine 73 from the opener had set his team on the way and it was up to the remaining batsmen to keep the pressure on, 188/4 with 5 overs to go. Morgan and Richardson came out with the intent to hit out, needed with the run rate up at just over 10 and Richardson was the first to go, edging one from Perman conventionally through to the 'keeper to be on his way. Next in (and out) was Tivey who was bowled first ball and with the hat trick ball coming, Faiz could only pop one up in the air, Perman belatedly realizing he was the only one near it and just managed to cling on to the catch, securing his hat trick in the process and ripping out the late middle order of Levante's team.

197/7 soon became 199/8 as Morgan, trying to hit everything out of the park to chase down the score, chased a wide one down the leg and managed to hook it back across to deep gully. The 'keeper had followed it all the way and managed to get to hit before it hit the ground and it was now a matter of breaching the 200 barrier for last pair West and Ullah. A couple of singles each and they did just that, finishing on 202 off their 40 overs, a bit of a let off for the home team who were looking at defeat during the second drinks break when the visitors were 151/1 and one of the home side had to leave but the 10 men stayed on track and got over the line in the end to pick up 18 points.

Both teams enjoyed a few drinks after in the Alfas Sun while catching up on the game's 2nd biggest match (England it seemed won) and the return match in Valencia will be one looked forward to by all involved.
