Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Sporting Alfas Sunday v Theale C C on Sun 24 Feb 2019 at 1.00
Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Lost Alfas lose by 25 runs after good chase
Match report
Theale showed up bright and early for the second match of their tour against the Alfas 2nds looking for a victory that would leave their tour nice and level at 1 win, 1 loss.
Agreeing that Theale could bat first, Byrne marshalled his troops and tried to figure out what to do with 10 players staring at him! After a bit of arranging, the match started and Walker took the first over, including the first wicket. White getting a slight nick behind to the 'keeper and walking without hesitation, even though neither the bowler nor the umpire claimed to have heard the edge. The talented Holder was in next and greeted Wood with a big 6 over the pond but Walker again came up trumps and snaffeled a good C&B to get rid of one of Thele's bigger dangermen. Left Handed opener Cooke welcomed another partner in Morris and the two put on 44 for the next wicket before Harvey got Cooke caught after a good 34 by M. Perman. Harvey did it again the next over, getting Morris caught by Walker. There was time before drinks for one more wicket as Ransom delivered his legendary Long Hop to A. Why only for him to slap the ball straight to Perman who took his 2nd catch of the day.
Drinks and Alfas were well placed at 84/5. However, R. Why and S. Brown came out after drinks with some good couterattacking play and put on 57 for the next wicket until KP got Why to play on going for a deft dab behind. M. Smith and M. Gray came and went without troubling the scorer but Sankaran was in a mood to bat today and with Brown, managed to see out the innings with a great stand of 82 to bring the Thele total to 215.
In reply, Waqer and Ames opened for Alfas with Tim living dangerously, flirting with LBW due to his footwork which finally brought his downfall in the 7th Over as he was trapped plumb in front. Old favourite Antonio Brown joined Waqer at the crease and together, both batsman brought up their 50 (eventually!) and added 90 for the 2nd wicket before Antonio heaved at one just after getting his 50 and was bowled before having to come off. Waqer on 45 by that stage. Ransom joined Waqer at the crease and saw him through to his 50 when Harvey replaced the retiring batsman but the overs were being eaten into by economical bowling from the visitors and the run rate was increasing. As the batsmen started to try and hit out, Ransom was well caught by Holder, the same man taking another catch to dimiss Harvey and with 40 needed off the last 2 overs, the chase made it to 190 before time and Overs got the better of the home side.
An enjoyable game by all and Alfas look forward to Thele's return for another enjoyable weekend's cricket when they wish.
