Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Won Openers follow brilliant bowling display

Match report Montenotte, having had their chase interrupted the previous day by the rain, were invited to bat to set the home side a total to chase. Montenotte, short of players had a few locals boster their ranks and one of them, Waseem, joined Brerton to open the innings.

However, things did not quite go according to plan for the visiting openers once Walker got his opening over out of the way! Coming down the hill, Imran, debuting for the home team, struck with his very first ball!! A late away swing did the batsman who could only guide it into the nonchalant hands of Fletcher at 1st slip. Imran finished off a dream over by claiming the other opener with not so nice a ball! A wide ball down leg was chased at and Waseem flicked an edge away but Byrne behind the stumps was able to throw himself across and grab the edge one handed to leave the visitors reeling on 6/2 off 2!

Walker did not take long to get in on the action and his 3rd over saw him open his account for the day. Firstly a very sharp chance just evaded the 'keeper as Whatley got a downward edge to a venomous ball that died just before the 'keeper but very next delivery, Walker got his man with a fine straight ball that was edged behind for a regulation catch. In his last over, Walker got another couple with both Haskell and Jimmy edging behind, the latter for a Golden Duck, much to the delight of his old teammates! 40/5 off 10 and the bowlers were given a rest.

Andy Dell and his left arm took over from Walker at the bottom and another debutant, Waseem, took over from Imran and produced a very fine spell that deserved a few wickets only for a couple of chances to go down. Dell came very close as a sharp chance was palmed up in the air by Imran but Qais could just not grab the ball as it fell back to earth. Parl and Newton were able to add 66 for their stand before Newton got caught up in a comedy of errors after seeing the stalwart Parl fall on 49 to a great catch from Dell off the bowling of Perman. Perman getting both long standing batsmen as he beat the bat and Byrne whipped off the bails but the canny Newton knew where he was...the same can not be said for the Umpire who raised the figure and Newton trudged off incredulously, before being quickly called back by Alfas who knew that he had not been out of his ground. However, the situation clearly unsettled the batsman who was out very next ball, spooning one to Qais to end a fine innings. 114/7 with overs running out, the visitors decided to try and push the score along against wily old vets Fletcher and Perman. Perman had got his two victims and then Fletcher got in on the act thanks to a quite spectacular catch in the deep by Qais! Nobody thought he was going to get the catch as he seemed to have lost it in the sun after waking up while it was halfway to him but he managed to throw out a hand and snaffle the ball at his ankles in the deep, how, nobody knows!

The final pair put on another 10 before good old Ted ran out his partner trying for one more run while the ball was in the 'keeper's gloves! Montenotte innings closed on 136/9.

After tea, Aimes, on a run of form, took new boy Hasan under his wing and opened with a stand that was as chanceless as it was slow! Both batsmen gave nothing away to the opposition and ground down the bowlers in a stand of 99 before Hasan clipped one last 4 to reach his 50 and came off. Aimes was not far behind, also bringing his 50 up with a well placed 4 but not before Qais had tried for the big shot and got caught on the boundary. However, as Byrne joined Fletcher at the crease, the score was 119 thanks to great opening batting and the two had no problems in getting the remaining runs to finish off a fun day for both teams.

Montenotte play their final game on the 09th April and as always, anyone and everyone are welcome to enjoy the match and players of any level are welcome to join in the fun.
