Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Sporting Alfas Saturday v Ansley CC on Sat 01 Nov 2008 at 12.00
Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Won Ansley 162 - 10 SACC 163 - 4 off 36.2 overs
Match report
SACC showed strength in depth in their latest encounter at the Woodbridge Oval when they overcame a plucky Ansley side who started off their 3 match tour with a 6 wicket defeat. Alfas, deprived of numerous first team players on Spanish training duty lost the toss and were put put into the field by the Warwickshire outfit.
The makeshift openers of Faran and Laundon were soon amongst the wickets. Indeed the Ansley batsmen had no response to Faran´s opening spell and this was reflected in the pacemans figures as he yielded only one run from his first five overs. This spell also brought the home team the wickets of Davis and Boyd respectively.
A slight groin strain to Laundon after three economical overs for five runs saw the introduction of Taylor. His left arm spin, prooved equally troublesome for Ansley and when Hopcroft replaced Faran in the 10th over things did not get any better for the tourists..Six for two became fourteen for four as Hopcroft bagged two wickets in consecutive overs.
14 for 4 soon became 14 for 5 with the run out of Franks courtesy of a fine throw from Metcalfe and the game as such looked to be heading for an early finish. Strong resistance then came in the shape of Musson and Parnell, who added 78 for the sixth wicket to give the tourists total an air of respectability.
Bellis then had Parnell caught one shy of his 50 by Howe at mid-on and when Musson soon followed with the score on 106 the home side were looking again to shut out the visitors for a sub-par total. Cameo innings by Phillips Sr (13) and Flannery (20) gave the Ansley bowling attack something to bowl at and the tenth wicket partnership of 32 nudged the Ansley final total to 162 all out off 36 overs.
The wickets were evenly shared amongst the Alfas bowling attack and young Harry Marshall can be particularly pleased with his days work in the field, finishing with figures of 1-13.
Alfas opened with the agressive Faran and the solid Taylor and soon the Ansley bowling attack where struggling to cope with Faran By the tenth over Alfas were sitting comfortably at 40 for 0 and Faran had 37 to his name on the scoreboard. Taylor looked comfortable until top edging a ball from Flannery to leg slip for the loss of Alfas`s first wicket. Newcomer Hopcroft showed poise and good attributes and 45 more runs were added in quick succession before Faran was stumped by Franks off the bowling of D Phillips Jr for an excellent 59. His innings had been very crowd pleasing and included seven fours and three sixes.
Hopcroft took up the mantle with the departure of Faran and continued to move the scoreboard along in an innings of 40 that included four fours and two sixes. Eleven year old Harry Marshall supplemented his bowling with a nice little innings in the mid order, and when he departed, skipper Laudon and wicket keeper Myers kept up the momentum for Alfas with regular boundaries. Alfas paced their reply well and got the winning runs courtesy of a four by Myers in the 36th over.
Captain Laundon should be complemented for his tactical awareness and for his sporting decisions in allowing the fringe players of Alfas to play a major role in this victory. Ansley showed glimpses of what they could do and it is anticipated their games against the Sunday and midweek sides will be much closer affairs if they dont fall prey to the many trappings of the Benidorm nightlife Saturday and Tuesday night
