Match report
This will always be remembered as the Steve Lewis game. After being asked to stand as captain, a position which he thrived on, he took about his task with great superiority. Reducing the Mojacar batsman, 31 FOR 2 by taking the responsibility of fielding at deep midwicket and took a fine catch next ball, great awareness and responsibility. He then showed his faith in his side by bringing on 16 year old Leg Spinner George Metcalfe within the power play over’s, George proceeded to repay his faith by bowling 4 over´s for 16 runs.
Steve Lewis did not bring himself on untill the 20th over. He bowled with real venom, and produced plenty of bounce to get the batsman to mishook to Evans at Midwicket, Steve produce not only the first maiden of the innings, a wicket maiden, this followed by the second wicket maiden of his spell a complete turnaround for SACC with a spell of 2 wickets for 2 runs from 6 over’s , and figures of 8runs for 2 wickets from Steve´s first 5overs , then on the 4th dot ball from this his 6th over , he bowled yet another unplayable delivery, where everyone shouted, groaned and moaned. Nobody could believe he had missed the stumps, Steve, falling to his knees, thinking he had got his man.
That was the moment when tragedy had struck, after few seconds did not get up, everybody rushed to his aid, we could see he was short of breath. Players, Steve Cowley and John Morgan proceeded to use all their great first aid skills trying to revive Steve Lewis trying to bring him back to us, whilst others called for the Ambulance. Players such as Joe Bainbridge talked to Steve through the whole dramatic experience, wanting him to come round , the paramedics did their best too , but to no avail.
We realised we had witnessed a very sad moment on the field and in the clubs history. All SACC players stood up to the challenge and were very brave in their approach however small or large their responsibility was.
Having been on the scene from start to finish I was very proud of everyone, I would also like to thank Graham Howe, with whom I was liaising, Graham was bringing Lesley down to see Steve.
The Mojacar players were all very understanding and stayed until we could do nothing further, they lined up at the gates silently watching Steve being carried away.
It was a very sad day for all, an SACC legend who will always be remembered.
